Social Emotional Learning (SEL)

Social and emotional learning (SEL) is the process through which all young people and adults acquire and apply the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to develop healthy identities, manage emotions and achieve personal and collective goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain supportive relationships, and make responsible and caring decisions. SEL advances educational equity and excellence through authentic school-family-community partnerships to establish learning environments and experiences that feature trusting and collaborative relationships, rigorous and meaningful curriculum and instruction, and ongoing evaluation. SEL can help address various forms of inequity and empower young people and adults to co-create thriving schools and contribute to safe, healthy, and just communities. Ohio's K-12 Social and Emotional Learning Standards are provided by grade bands (kindergarten-grade 3, grades 3-5, middle grades and high school) and provide a continuum of development across five competencies: Self-Awareness, Self-Management, Social Awareness, Relationship Skills and Responsible Decision-Making. The social and emotional learning standards are for all students, kindergarten through grade 12.  These life skills give students a strong foundation for academic achievement as well as success in life.

Southwest has partnered with Beech Acres Parenting Center utilizing The Character Effect Curriculum. The Character Effect is a social and emotional learning program that combines mindfulness and character strengths that is utilized in grades K-12. It is designed to improve students’ self-control and increase classroom participation1 . It is a complete, universal program that improves the culture of a school’s community by building on everyone’s innate strengths2. The expectation is that all students learn a character strength and complete an activity based on the strength. For more information visit A Social & Emotional Curriculum | The Character Effect
