MWE Update-January 14, 2025
Miami Whitewater Elementary Parents & Guardians -
We are certainly walking in a "winter wonderland" this week! Looks like temperatures won't be above freezing until the end of the week and we'll have a brief warm-up for the weekend, then back to frigid temps and winter weather on Sunday. Please continue to make sure your child is dressed appropriately for the weather. Students go out for recess if the temperature is above 32 degrees. It's very helpful if you mark your child's coat, hat, gloves, scarf, etc. with their name. If items get lost in the shuffle, that helps us return them to the correct classroom. Also, proceed with caution through our school parking lot, carpool lane, and along the SLSD Main Campus loop road. Until the forecast gets above freezing, there will be mounds of snow and potential slick spots when snow melts and refreezes. We are very appreciative of our custodian, Mr. Randy, as well as Acra Landscaping and Rob Deller for keeping our lots and sidewalks clear and safe for our students and their families.
Spelling Bee - Our annual Spelling Bee is today at 1:30 in the cafeteria. If your child is in 4th or 5th grade and is participating, you are welcome to join us in the audience. Our front lot should have more than enough parking spots available. However, there are mounds of snow at the end of each row that are covering spaces. Feel free to park behind our building in the green barn lot between our school and the high school football field if there are no spots out front. Our SRO will be out front assisting with parking as well.
This is a wonderful opportunity for our fourth and fifth grade students to showcase their spelling skills and build confidence. Please keep in mind that our Spelling Bee is a friendly competition. Mrs. Neckel meets with Spelling Bee participants in advance to show them where they will sit on stage, how to approach the microphone, what is expected when it's their turn to spell, etc. This helps calm nerves a bit. We look forward to seeing you in the audience to cheer on our participants. Your support means the world to our students!
Winter Conference Sign-Up Links - We are excited to invite you to our Winter Parent-Teacher Conferences! This is a great opportunity to discuss your child’s progress, celebrate achievements, and collaborate on goals for the rest of the school year. Winter conferences will be February 4 & 6 at school. PTO will be hosting the Scholastic Book Fair that week & it will be open on conference nights. Please use the link below to sign up for a conference date and time that is convenient for your family's busy schedule. We strive to have a 100% completion rate for conferences, as the connection between home and school is vital to your child's success.

National School Board Appreciation Month - January is national School Board Appreciation Month! We are fortunate to have amazing SLSD Board of Education members leading us to greatness. Our students made cards, wrote thank-you letters, and recorded videos that were delivered to board members before their January 9th meeting. For more information about our school board members, click here: https://www.southwestschools.org/departments/board-of-education/members/
First Semester Awards Assembly - Grades 3-5 will honor student accomplishments on January 17th at 1:30 at an awards assembly. Parents and Guardians are encouraged to attend. Contact Mr. Kelly (dave.kelly@southwestschools.org) or your child's teacher if you have questions about the awards assembly.
Mercy Health Consent Drive - Did you know that Southwest Schools has a Mercy Health Clinic located right across the parking lot from MWE inside Harrison High School? The Practice Manager at the Mercy Health Clinic (on site at Harrison High School) contacted us last fall about participating in a consent drive. Every year, Mercy does a consent drive to get parents and guardians to know who they are and to get consents completed. Consent forms are good for the entire time the child is in our school district. Mercy is making this a classroom competition and will reward the top few classrooms with an ice cream party or donuts. The consent flyers will be sent home next week with every student and are due back by Feb 5th. Nurse Barb is collecting the forms in the clinic. You can email Nurse Barb at barb.simpson@southwestschools.org or click here for more information: https://www.mercy.com/locations/specialty-locations/school-based-health-clinics/mercy-health-southwest-sbhc
